Icon's DOCTOR diesel engine performance monitoring system has been chosen to monitor the engines aboard SeaLand's Champion class container ships. In all, nine systems were supplied for the new vessels in addition to systems that SeaLand had purchased earlier. The installation at Connah's Quay Power Station presented a number of challenges, all of which have been met by the capabilities of Icon's ICONET network and GUARDIAN condition monitoring software. The main items that had to be catered for were the corrosive atmosphere around the towers, the distances involved for transmission of the signals from each tower and an interface to the main PLC system to allow alerts and alarms to be shown on the monitoring screens in the control room. Arjo Wiggins Dartford paper mill installed the initial components of a GUARDIAN system for condition monitoring of their machine over three years ago. Condition monitoring is not a new practice at Continental Teves in Ebbw Vale. Since 1993, a system using manually collected data has been used with good results.
